Enough – my word of the year for 2019

Enough - my guiding word for 2019

One thing I’ve learnt from letting myself slow down is that it’s easier when you have boundaries that force you to prioritise. With this in mind, I’ve chosen “enough” as my guiding word of the year.

I’ll ask myself, “What is enough?” to help me frame what’s in and what’s out in all areas of my life.

Last year, I started using enough lists to simplify tasks and projects. I find them to be a tangible and practical tool for intentional living. I want to apply the same principle to all aspects of my life.

In adopting “enough” as my guiding word for the year, I’m aiming for two things:

  1. Focus – push back against the coulds and the shoulds.

In a world of YOLO (You Only Live Once) and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), there’s a constant nagging pressure to make the most of everything. It’s so easy to spread yourself too thin and push yourself too hard. By honing a strong sense of what is enough for me, I won’t be so easily persuaded by society or other people’s ideas of what I could or should be doing. The result – a closer focus on what’s most important to me.

  1. Contentment – the antidote to never-enoughism.

I’m in the fortunate position where I have almost infinite choices and possibilities for what I can do, be or have. As wonderful as this is, it’s not without its downsides. The prime one being that, whatever I do, be or have, the knowledge that there’s something better out there erodes my satisfaction. There is no finish line. By identifying what is enough for me, I give myself a finish line, a place and space to be happy with where I’m at.

While I hope to let myself off the hook in some areas and be content with what I have, I don’t intend to settle or forego improvement. Being satisfied with good enough and aiming to do better don’t have to be mutually exclusive. My focus on enough will include identifying areas where I’m falling short of what is enough and where I need to step up.

Did you select a guiding word for the year? What’s yours?

  1. YOLO and FOMO are two things that do my head in. I can’t stand it. Sometimes I WANT to stay in with my cup of coffee and book, you know? That’s how I fill up my cup and get the most out of my day. Also, trying to live a YOLO life with a two-year-old is HARD. ‘Enough’ is such a good word. I might have to store that one away for another year. This year, my word is ‘build’. I moved to Auckland six months ago, so I’m trying to build on what I’ve established in that timeframe. I’m loving it so far!

    1. Oh I am with you on staying in! Sounds like build is very useful for the phase that you’re in.
One of the things that having a baby/little kids taught me is that YOLO is less about the big things and more about the little things – at least when you are in the little kids stage of life.
