For me, right now: September 2018

Summer is on the way. I can tell because I want to scratch my eyes out from all the pollen around at the moment. I’m pretty excited that the days are getting longer and I’m looking forward to getting back into regular evening walks.

For me, right now: September 2018. A round-up of what I've been doing, reading, listening to, making and thinking about this month.
Climbing up to get a first glimpse of your birthday cake

September marks one year since my son started school. The time’s flown by, well apart from the first day. That first day seemed like the longest day of my life. Waiting and waiting to pick him up and find out how it went. I climbed up a bank so I could sneak a peek through his classroom window. I still love it when I arrive early for pick up and get to watch him doing his thing when he doesn’t know I’m there.

What I’ve been:

Reading – More from the page-turning thriller genre, this time Something in the Water by Caroline Steadman. I’ve noticed a change in my reading choices this year. As I work more, I opt more for escapism, with less need for an intellectual challenge. Although this book definitely got me thinking about what I’d do in the protaganist’s shoes, thankfully mytropical island honeymoon was not as eventful.

Listening to – I’ve just discovered the By the Book podcast. The two hosts read and live by a different self-improvement book each episode. It reminds me of a hilarious book I read a few years ago called Living Oprah, a memoir of the author’s year trying to live by all the advice offered by the Oprahshow.

I’m a sucker for reading self-improvement books, but I don’t take them all that seriously. What I like to do most, and also By the Book does,  is question what’s behind the advice and which parts, if any, are right for me. On a similar theme, you might like Is your ‘best self’ worth chasing? – a post about how to intentionally apply all the great advice out there about living intentionally.

Making – I made a delicious icecream cake. I love recipes like this – looks impressive but is super simple. You could customise it in so many ways. I might try a chocolate variation next.

Thinking about – It’s the first day of the school holidays today and I’m thinking about the tension between my love of certainty and having a plan, and the need to be flexible and take each day as it comes. We’ll see how day two plays out!

How was September for you? What have you been reading lately?
